Dantu Site

Dantu site is located in Dantu Village of Chaohe town, Wulian County of Rizhao, getting its name from the large area of red colored soil to the east of the village (Dan means “red” in Chinese). The site stretches 680 meters from east to the west and about 490 meters from north to south, covering an area of about 330,000 square meters. The terrain slopes from west to east. The cultural layer is located from 0.3-3 meters, and the deepest reaches four meters. It has abundant cultural relics with chronicle continuity, including Dawenkou Culture, Longshan Culture, Western Zhou Culture, the Spring and Autumn period Culture, the Warring States Period to the Han Dynasty Culture and so on. The unearthed relics include stoneware, jade ware, pottery ware and bronze ware. According to the archaeological survey, excavations and unearthed relics, it is the first and earliest city in Haidai area excavated by scientific means in the present era. In 1977, it was designated as a provincial Cultural Relic Protection Unit by Shandong Provincial Revolutionary Council, and was released as National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 1996 by the State Council.
